The Mission of Art, Part One

Art as Research

Central to the goal of making art is an inquiry into the human condition, both the worlds within and outside of us. Each discipline offers a different way of thinking and asking questions.

More than mere mastery of artistic techniques, the goal of art practice is to learn something about life. The mystery of light draws photographers out to explore the world and to understand how to translate a scene into images.

Art as Expression

Some feelings are too personal to share in any ordinary way. They require transformation. Making photographs gives an artist an outlet for their emotions.

Through the process of searching and capturing, the photographer gains traction in the struggle to understand the ineffable.
